Chris Brown Gets His First #1 Album in 7 Years with ‘Indigo’

Chris Brown just disproved the notion that albums don’t sell anymore. We’ve lost track of the number of artists who have said over the years they’re not making any albums anymore and will just be releasing singles. Most of the time they never follow through with the declaration but it still shows the disinterest and malaise a lot of artists seem to have over dropping albums these days. Chris Brown has found the formula to remain on top with people interested in picking up his album over the competition with his new project Indigo going straight to Number 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. It was his first time in 7 years and here’s the irony. All the times he had Number 1 albums were all after his incident with Rihanna which will not be discussed here. And as for the top 10 slots, he has 7 other albums to all reached the top 10 albums chart.

For one, he’s Chris Brown. It doesn’t matter how many of his contemporaries pass him on the charts, he’s still the original talent. Beyond that, the album has over 30 tracks. Out of sheer curiosity we could see someone listening just wondering what the hell someone has to say that can’t be done in say 1/3 or 1/2 as many tracks. It still is a solid effort. He brought back Juvenile. That alone deserves a reward. He brought out the man that created to a generation of soon to be bad knees for twerking every time his voice was heard. After hearing he would be on the album, our response was “take my money. Take all of it, please.” Then there’s the star studded features from Lil Nas X to Nicki Minaj, Justin Bieber, Lil Wayne, Tyga, Trey Songz and Tory Lanez.

The album has only been out for about 10 days and has already produced 6 singles, all on the Hot 100, two of which have been there for at least a week. Undecided has peaked at 35 and the Drake assisted No Guidance has catapulted into the top 10 at number 9.

Chris Brown has never been one to be counted out and this is an incredible accomplishment for someone who just turned 30. While many are self-conscious about that age, he’s stepped into that age still dominating the industry. He’s had one controversy since releasing the album and that is a lyric about liking black girls with good hair which has been slammed by many. We’re going to make the unpopular opinion that he was simply making a play on Beyonce’s words of “Becky with the good hair” to show his appreciation for black women saying he preferred black girls. But of course, music is subjective. Given how misogynist music is, to pick this one line to throw an artist away over is laughable. We still love you though, Chris.
