Serena Williams Reveals Postpartum Depression Caused Tennis Loss & Says She Felt Like a Bad Mom
Last week wasn’t a particularly good week for tennis legend Serena Williams who just not only lost a game but had the biggest defeat of her career thus far. She lost 6-1 and 6-2 in the first round against Great Britain’s Johanna Konta at the Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic at San Jose, Calif. That’s quite astonishing considering she’s been ranked Number One in the world by the Women’s Tennis Association on 8 separate occasions.
“I think she played well in the second set,” Williams said. “I think I wasn’t sharp at all in the first set, and then she got confident and clearly ran away with it.”
In an Instagram post Serena revealed that she had been suffering with post-partum depression now a full year after giving birth to her child Alexis. “Last week was not easy for me. Not only was I accepting some tough personal stuff, but I just was in a funk. Mostly, I felt like I was not a good mom.”
She confided in her mother and her sister about “post-partum emotions” and concluded “It’s totally normal to feel like I’m not doing enough for my baby,” she explained. “We have all been there. I work a lot, I train, and I’m trying to be the best athlete I can be.”
She says she struggles with finding time to spend with her children. And keep in mind the number of celebrities that have children and are parading them throughout social media which can absolutely mess with a person’s psyche because of course none of that is true. Kim Kardashian is always walking with her children but that’s because she orders her nanny to stand far behind so it looks like she’s taking care of them herself.
“You are the true heroes,” Williams said. “I’m here to say: if you are having a rough day or week ― it’s ok ― I am, too!!! There’s always tomm!”
“Sometimes I get really down and feel like, man, I can’t do this,” the athlete said in an interview with Vogue earlier this year. “It’s that same negative attitude I have on the court sometimes. I guess that’s just who I am. No one talks about the low moments ― the pressure you feel, the incredible letdown every time you hear the baby cry.”
She continued, saying, “I’ve broken down I don’t know how many times. Or I’ll get angry about the crying, then sad about being angry, and then guilty, like, why do I feel so sad when I have a beautiful baby? The emotions are insane.”
She’s even talked about missing important things like her child’s first steps.

Postpartum depression affects on average 1 out of every 10 women in the first few weeks after child birth and actually affects nearly all moms within the first week. If untreated it can go on for years. If you don’t think it’s real, follow Cardi B’s Twitter account as she tweets in live time random outbursts these days since giving birth as she adjusts. Psychiatrist Madelaine Wohlreic, head of the Postpartum Disorders Project at Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia says “During the pregnancy, I see the husband come in with the wife for her visits, but on the postpartum visit she’s almost always by herself. The expectation is that after the baby arrives the mother knows what to do and doesn’t need support.” NBC News medical contributor Dr. Natalie was on the Today Show today and said regarding “postpartum emotions,” ““anybody can experience this.” The issue is that if it continues beyond 6 weeks it’s time to schedule a postpartum visit.
Last week was not easy for me. Not only was I accepting some tough personal stuff, but I just was in a funk. Mostly, I felt like I was not a good mom. I read several articles that said postpartum emotions can last up to 3 years if not dealt with. I like communication best. Talking things through with my mom, my sisters, my friends let me know that my feelings are totally normal. It’s totally normal to feel like I’m not doing enough for my baby. We have all been there. I work a lot, I train, and I’m trying to be the best athlete I can be. However, that means although I have been with her every day of her life, I’m not around as much as I would like to be. Most of you moms deal with the same thing. Whether stay-at-home or working, finding that balance with kids is a true art. You are the true heroes.
