It’s becoming more and more evident that my favorite girl group The Saturdays may in fact be no more. The girls have yet to make it official but there signs are there. I may have to mourn later. In the meantime, Mollie King has made her long awaited solo debut. So how does it sound?

Mollie King

Many people, including myself, thought that Mollie would debut with some kind of over-the-top hyperactive manufactured pop tune. I am pleasantly surprised by this direction she’s going. No one probably saw this sound coming from Mollie. The song was produced by LA based duo The Blueprint and co-written with Rob Fusari (Beyonce, Lady Gaga). The song is a melancholy midtempo ballad. Mollie sounds very gloomy and somber which is the perfect vox for this kind of track. It oozes with sadness and longing.

Mollie went in-depth about the song with The Mirror Celeb:

“I was going through a bit of a rough patch at home, and I had a session where I wasn’t feeling great on the day,” she told us. “I was going to cancel it, but I thought, ‘That’s not me’. So I went in and said, ‘Look guys, I know that I’m wanting to write upbeat floor-filler tracks, but today all I can’t think about that, this is all I can think about’.

I told them the situation and what I was going through. It kind of went from talking to them to us sitting round a piano and the lyrics just fell out of me. It’s made me realize I’m so much better at writing songs about something I’m going through rather than trying to write a hit. [Breakups] are different for everybody. All I can say is that, he hasn’t heard the track, but everything I want to say about it is in the song, and it’s for me.”
