Moonlight is one of the most buzzed about films of the year, and even before its limited release in theaters this past weekend, the Barry Jenkins directed film had already garnered unanimous critical acclaim, with critics praising the acting, direction, screenplay, cinematography, and score.

The film tells the story of a young man named Chiron, who struggles with his identity, trying to come out while growing up in a tough Miami neighborhood. The coming of age tale takes place over three periods of his life.

Trevante Rhodes, who plays Chiron as an adult, sat down for an interview with Out magazine, where he spoke about his role, his time as a college track star, and how being black and gay in America is the ultimate struggle. He also poses for a few photos with photographer Ramona Rosales. Take a look at a few of the excerpts below:

ON CONNECTING TO THE CHARACTER: “One way I connected with Chiron is that, like him, I didn’t grow up with a father. I think his lack of a male influence increased his need for love. But I’m also a hopeless romantic. I believe you find that one person who you’re supposed to be with, and I felt Chiron found that person early on.”

ON HOW HAVING GAY FRIENDS HELPED WITH THE ROLE: “I knew what he went through, and I knew how hard it was for him to find himself.”

ON HOPING THE MOVIE WILL CHANGE PEOPLE’S PERSPECTIVES ON BEING GAY IN THE BLACK COMMUNITY: “Being a black person in America right now is shit, being a homosexual in America right now is shit, and being a black homosexual is the bottom for certain people. That’s why I’m so excited for people to see Moonlight. I don’t feel like there’s a solution for our problems, but this movie might change people. That’s why you do it — because you feel like you’re doing something that matters. This is someone’s story.”

In other Moonlight news, the film has set a new box office record for its opening weekend! Moonlight grossed $414,740 over the weekend at four locations in New York and Los Angeles, for a per-screen average of $103,685.
