Get ready! VH1’s Hip Hop Honors will be returning next week and some big named celebrities will be featured but probably not in the way that you think. This year’s theme is called The 90’s Game Changers, and it will celebrate the era of Hip-Hop’s influence on Pop culture, television, movies and its albums and is being billed as a 90’s block party.

Actress and comedian Regina King will serve as the host while Martin Lawrence and Mariah Carey have been announced as two of the honorees.

After being honored last year, Missy Elliott will open up the show and it’s only befitting because along with Timbaland, Aaliyah and the rest of their collective, Missy was a game changer in the 90s and serves as the ONLY female rapper with 5 platinum albums and with over 30 million records in the United States alone, she is the bestselling female rap artist in Nielsen Music History.

With his self-titled show celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, it remains a prominent influence upon musicians today like Big Sean’s video for Play No Games and helped bring artists like B.I.G., Kid n Play, Snoop Dogg, Salt-n-Pepa and Method Man all made appearances – just to name a few.

It should be no surprise that Mariah Carey has been selected as an honoree, as Hip Hop has always shown love to her. In fact, after making a VERY bold move by working with Ol’ Dirty Bastard for a remix to Fantasy, it is still regarded as a landmark moment in cross-genre collaborations.

With hard hitting beats and friendships with Jermaine Drupri, Jay Z, Nas, Rick Ross, Bone Thugs and Missy Elliott as well as songs with them and many more, Mariah Carey is a hip hop legend herself.

The show airs on September 18th at 9PM EST/PST on VH1.
