And just like that, a simple mistake can cause you to lose, well, everything. During a New Year’s day episode of Jeopardy! a contestant named Nick was well on his way to winning the game but a mispronunciation caused him to fall down to second place.

TV icon and host Alex Trebek read the clue: “A song by Coolio from ‘Dangerous Minds’ goes back in time to become a 1667 John Milton classic.”

Referring to the book Paradise Lost and the Grammy-winning song Gangsta’s Paradise, Nick responded with: “What is GangSTER’s Paradise Lost.” He was, initially, awarded accordingly.

But the judges WERE NOT having it. Just minutes after he received his money, Alex responded: “Our judges have re-evaluated one of your responses a few minutes ago, Nick. You said gangster’s instead of gangsta’s on that song by Coolio, so we take $3,200 away from you. You are now in second place.”

Jeopardy even released an official statement clarifying the judges decision revealing that both gangster AND gangsta are both listed separately in the Oxford English Dictionary, each with its own unique definition, making his response unacceptable:
