The two day hearing on the fate of what was once America’s favorite dad, Bill Cosby ended today with him receiving a 3 to 10 year sentence for drugging and raping Andrea Constand back in 2004. The then Temple University women’s basketball team director of operations has said the event took place at his Elkins Park, PA home.

“It is time for justice. Mr. Cosby, this has all circled back to you. The time has come,” Montgomery County Judge Steven O’Neill said. He quoted from victim Andrea Constand’s own statement to the court, in which she said Cosby took her “beautiful, young spirit and crushed it.”

He has now become the first celebrity to be sent to prison in the #MeToo era. He was labeled a “sexually violent predator” by the judge which comes with one’s whereabouts made known to neighbors and area schools. He also will have to receive monthly counseling for the rest of his life.

Cosby’s legal team originally asked for house arrest saying he was too old and vulnerable for prison. Prosecutors on the other hand wanted him to receive 5 to 10 years stating he could still pose a threat to women. Montgomer County District Attorney Kevin Steele stated “He was good at hiding this for a long time. Good at suppressing this for a long time. So it’s taken a long time to get there.”

The Cosby case “really raised awareness of the pervasiveness of … sexual misconduct against subordinates and against women of relatively less power,” said Daniel Filler, dean of Drexel University’s law school. “For jurors, I think it’s inherently changed the credibility of the accusers.”

Constand’s criminal case against Cosby was the only case to make it this far out of the 60 accusers that have come against him over the last 3 years. In a statement submitted to the court she said she had experienced years of anxiety and self-doubt because of Cosby’s actions.

“When the sexual assault happened, I was a young woman brimming with confidence and looking forward to a future bright with possibilities,” she wrote in her five-page statement. “Now, almost 15 years later, I’m a middle-aged woman who’s been stuck in a holding pattern for most of her adult life, unable to heal fully or to move forward.”

She also wrote of Cosby: “We may never know the full extent of his double life as a sexual predator, but his decades-long reign of terror as a serial rapist is over.”

Cosby and his legal team had branded Constand a “con-artist” framing him of millions as he made a $3.4 million settlement with her over a decade ago. While he admitted to giving her quaaludes to sleep with her, he said it was consensual. Her claim is that she was told they were herbal pills to ease stress.

It has been every bit of a downward spiral for Cosby’s reputation since Hannibal Buress made a rape joke about Cosby in 2014. Since then he’s had universities take back their honorary degrees given to him and the Cosby show’s had its reruns taken from the air.
